Pueblo Garzon, Uruguay

Nestled between South American giants Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is a quirky little country whose personality is both progressive and traditional. It is culturally sophisticated and economically stable. It has more cows than people, more sheep than tourists and enough space to get lost easily.

CAMPO is located in Pueblo Garzon, an up-and-coming town deep in gaucho country one hour from the glitzy resort town of Punta del Este and 30 minutes from boho-chic Jose Ignacio.

Garzon once bustled around a wheat mill and had an important railway stop on the Montevideo-Rocha line. In the 1950s, after the train service was cancelled and Ruta 9 was built 11 km away, the village population decreased exponentially from 2,000 to 200; the pueblo felt nearly abandoned.

Today, Garzon’s residents still hover around 200. But the quiet pueblo is slowly growing with international denizens and fast becoming a hub of food, culture and wine. It is the home of celebrated chef Francis Mallmann’s restaurant and hotel, as well as Bodega Garzon, a stateof-the-art winery and olive oil plantation. Since CAMPO’s inception in 2018, Garzon has transformed into El Este’s heart of arts and culture with more galleries and artistic spaces than eateries.
